When customers are coming slow, most small businesses explore the world of online marketing to bring in more clientele themselves.
But naturally, they get it wrong and end up losing hundreds in ad spend and leave thousands in potential income on the table.
We don’t want that to happen to you, so here’s the 3 things you need to know about marketing to run a successful campaign for your business - no matter your marketing experience and no matter your industry.
1. The Importance of Understanding WHO You’re Talking To
This is the most important step, still - most owners completely skip it and is the reason so much marketing fails.
Let’s say you’re writing a letter to a member of your family, your Aunt Josephine
You can imagine what that’d look like - now if you were asked to send this letter to your cousin George — would you?
Hell no!
Same goes for marketing, you need to know exactly who it is is going to buy as a result of seeing your ad.
We call this the target market, and understanding this will get you 90% of the way to running a successful campaign.
Because once you understand who it is you're talking to, you can understand what drives these people to buy your product in the first place. — which you can turn into an extremely effective piece of marketing.
For a weight loss program it’s the fact the target market feels lethargic all the time, for a chiropractor it’s the fact their lower back hurts when they get out of bed.
So how do you find your customers' drive for buying?
Speak to your current clients/past customers and ask them why they bought from you, or look at the testimonials of competitors — People overshare their frustrations and desires on 5* and 1* reviews all the time.
Which is literal gold dust for you.
Once you have it, see the next section for the best way to use it in your ad for the most conversions…
Secondly - What’s The Message?
People see ads alllll the time, and are pretty fed up of them
So yours needs to cut through the noise and stand out
Here is my step by step process to convert someone mindlessly scrolling on social media to reading every word of your ad like it’s the finale to an Agatha Christie novel:
Catch their attention with the image, use either vibrant colours like red, orange, green, or something wildly different (like giant flamingos in a city for a photoshop ad) to stop them scrolling
Then use the headline (first line) to speak directly to the motivation we established earlier.
Keep the rest of your ad visibly short (no more than a couple of paragraphs) people don’t want to read a novel…
Use the rest of the text to build on from the headline, and ask for them to take action at the end.
That’s the method I use to stand out in today’s world where attention spans go liggidy-split.
Finally - What Medium Will We Use To Connect With Them?
This one’s easy
With meta ads and google ads at our fingertips, it’s never been easier to get in front of your target market.
Simply open up Facebook ad manager, boop a few buttons with the gender, age range, interests and desires and let it rip.
Same goes for google ads, put in the keywords your audience will be searching for (e.g. “Lower back pain” or “Chiropractor London” for a chiropractor in London) and BAM! Your ad is in front of your target market just like that.
Which was unheard of 20+ years ago… so use it!
And that’s it, good marketing in a nutshell
You are now armed with the information to go out and create your own successful ad campaign.
